In recent years, the conversation around mental health has grown louder, and rightfully so. Yet, when it comes to men’s mental health, silence still echoes in many spaces. Too often, boys are taught to “toughen up,” suppress their emotions, and avoid vulnerability. This culture of silence can persist into adulthood, where many men struggle to express their difficulties or seek help.

That’s why it’s crucial to start early. By nurturing emotional awareness and encouraging open conversations among young men, we can begin to change this narrative. Early intervention helps to normalise mental health as an important part of overall well-being, just like physical health. When young boys are taught that it’s okay to feel, to talk, and to ask for help, we lay the groundwork for healthier, more resilient adults.

Embedding these behaviours early doesn’t just support individual well-being, it builds communities that are more empathetic, connected, and strong. Let’s challenge harmful stereotypes and create safe spaces where our young men grow up knowing that strength includes vulnerability and that seeking help is a sign of courage, not weakness.

Together, we can raise a generation that values mental wellness just as much as physical health, starting with our boys today.
